Around Our Towns: Breakfast

Breakfast By Eileen Teufel
“I am not a morning person.  I love sunrises but wish they were later in the morning – say around 9:00 AM.  But that doesn’t stop me from enjoying breakfast – out!  My favorite place for breakfast is Elger Bay Café, a true friendly, neighborhood place.  If it’s busy, you might share one of the bigger tables and make new friends.  I almost always order the #5 – homemade biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, and bacon.  And yes, I do eat it all but no, I don’t lick the plate.  Some one might see me… Next great place is the Duck In Café.  On my first visit, when the waitress found out I was new in town, she offered me free coffee.  How can you not love a place that welcomes you with free coffee.  I love everything there, but my special treat is the breakfast sandwich with bacon, like an Egg Mc Muffin but only much, much better.  If you’re in a hurry, call ahead and order and eat it on the go.  I haven’t been to the Stanwood Café for some time, but it was voted Best of Stanwood & Camano Island for Breakfast so I know it has to be good.  I’m making a point of going back soon.  I tried our newest restaurant, Wayne’s Corner Café.  I love what they’ve done to the old Philly Cheese place.  I had the biscuits and gravy but later found out they are noted for their omelets so I plan on trying them again soon, I’m always on the look out for a good mushroom and cheese omelet.  Willow & Jim’s in Silvana has a very extensive breakfast menu and is one of the few places I’ve ventured beyond the biscuits and gravy or omelet breakfast (I am some times not very adventurous).  Their pancakes were outstanding. Believe it or not, Bob’s Burgers and Brew have great breakfasts, so when you are setting out on an adventure, stop by one of their locations for “starters”.  Calico Cupboard Café & Bakery (with locations in Mount Vernon and La Conner) is another recommendation.  And if you are looking for a pastry for breakfast, try Blackbird Café and the Scandia Coffeehouse in Stanwood.  Great bakery selections. I’m going to end with my secret passion, the Maltby Café in Maltby.  This is THE BEST PLACE for breakfast.  It’s a distance to travel but it’s worth it.  Everything on the menu is great, including the giant cinnamon roll.  Be prepared for a line, it’s almost always crowded, but worth the wait. What is your secret passion for breakfast?
