Where Has It All Gone?

WHERE HAS IT GONE?
A Reflection by Deb Bell
Warm are the nights and warmer the days
as the last of this season fades slowly away.
School sales blossom in stores across town
as the flowers and lawns quickly shade into brown.
Sports teams at practice and cheerleaders shout
to sharpen their skills to ward off a rout.
Home canners whistle while foods are preserved
for the bounty of summer in winter to serve.
Why is the Summer the season we long for?
It seems longer to get here, has the longest of days,
yet the shortest of time we get to go play.
Spring has its place with new growth and wonder
and Fall is the time for which most hunters hunger.
Winter has beauty in new fallen snow
but Summer’s the one we don’t want to let go.
Is it picnics we crave?  Getting cool by the water?
Or a sense of more leisure in weather that’s hotter?
Could it be the vacations after long months of planning?
Or seeing Aunt Sophie or Gramp’s new Harley?
Might camping in forests or hiking long trails
be the fix that one seeks to cure all their ills?
Maybe jetting in boats across glistening seas,
or crabbing and clamming makes you weak in the knees.
If there’s still things of Summer you’re waiting to do,
best hop to it quick ‘cause it’s almost all through!
